Dining at Putien just got more affordable.

The well-known restaurant chain in Singapore, famous for its home-style Fujian cuisine, has announced that it will absorb the 9% Goods and Services Tax (GST) and waive the 10% service charge at all its outlets starting August 20, 2024. This new pricing policy will be in effect at all 19 Putien outlets, both Uncle Fong Hot Pot Restaurant locations at Suntec City and Great World, as well as Sam Leong St Chicken Rice at 12 Verdun Road in Farrer Park.

A Strategic Decision by Putien

Putien Group’s founder and chairman, Fong Chi Chung, shared that this decision has been in the works since January 2024. Contrary to being a temporary promotion, this is a long-term move aimed at giving back to the loyal customers who have supported the restaurant chain over the years. Fong explained that the business, which started with a single outlet on Kitchener Road in 2000, has now achieved scalability with its 19 outlets. This growth has led to better purchasing power, allowing Putien to manage costs more effectively.

“Now, we are in a position to return the support that Singaporeans have given to us,” Fong said in Mandarin. He emphasized that by making dining more affordable, customers are likely to visit more frequently, which in turn will benefit the business.

No Compromise on Quality or Portions

Despite the changes in pricing, Fong assured diners that the portions and menu prices at Putien will remain the same. Signature dishes like the Deep-fried Pork Trotters with Salt & Pepper and ‘100-Second’ Stewed Yellow Croaker will continue to be served without any compromise on quality or quantity.

Overcoming Recent Challenges

The decision to absorb GST and waive service charges comes on the heels of a challenging period for Putien. The group’s catering arm, Pu Tien Services, had faced a suspension due to the ByteDance food poisoning incident on July 30, 2024. However, the suspension was lifted on August 10, and business has since returned to normal. Fong noted that sales had dipped by 10 to 20% following the incident, but have since recovered.

A Legacy of Excellence

Putien’s flagship restaurant on Kitchener Road has been a cornerstone of the brand’s success. The restaurant held one Michelin star for seven consecutive years from 2016 to 2023. Although it lost its star in 2024, Fong remains optimistic, stating that the team is committed to improving and regaining their prestigious status.

With this bold move to absorb GST and waive service charges, Putien is set to enhance its appeal and continue serving its loyal customers with the same dedication and quality it has been known for over the past two decades.
